8 Common Liposuction Misconceptions

San Diego Cosmetic Surgeon Body ContouringFor nearly five decades, liposuction (also known as liposculpture) has helped patients shed fat and achieve outstanding aesthetic goals. For many patients, liposuction is an excellent choice for removing pockets of fat and it’s versatile enough for a variety of areas, including the stomach, buttocks, waist, hips, thighs, knees, upper arms, and more.

Despite the leaps in medical technology over the past 20 years, myths and misconceptions about liposuction still persist. The highly-trained and board-certified dermatologists and cosmetic surgeons at Cosmetic Laser Dermatology in San Diego know that making a commitment to improve your health or appearance is often fraught with concerns about safety, effectiveness, post-procedure complications, and more. This is why we’re deconstructing the following 8 common liposuction misconceptions.

Common Myths and Misconceptions about Liposculpture

Misconception 1: Liposuction is an Effective Alternative to Exercise and Diet

La Jolla Abdomen Body Sculpting ProcedureDespite what many people may think, liposuction is not a viable alternative to exercising or eating right. If you undergo liposuction and then follow it up with a bad diet or exercise habits, you’re putting your results in jeopardy.

It’s essential to remember that liposuction is not a weight loss solution; it should be considered a supplement to your diet and exercise routine, which, when combined, can increase the chances that you reach your body contouring goals.

Misconception 2: Liposculpture Works for Obese People

Liposculpture works best for people whose weight is fairly stable and who are close to their ideal weight. They’ve kept fit through regular exercise and a healthful diet over the years, but pockets of fat either persist despite efforts to eliminate them or have grown due to aging or inactivity.

At times, liposuction fat removal to some areas like the inner thighs or lower abdomen can help one exercise and better lose weight. So, even if you are overweight, liposuction may have a role in helping you achieve your goal.

Misconception 3: Liposuction is Just for Women

La Jolla Unwanted Fat Surgical TreatmentLiposuction is actually a common fat reduction procedure among men, simply because it eliminates bulges in places that make men self-conscious, such as the belly or love handles. In addition, many men have “man boobs” that are genetic. Liposuction of the male breast can achieve outstanding results. Men often find that the fat removal procedure is ideal for helping them reach or maintain that desired lean, sculpted physique.

Men are becoming more comfortable with undergoing procedures for aesthetic reasons, and while having cosmetic work done may not yet be mainstream for men, it certainly is no longer taboo.

Misconception 4: There’s No Difference Between Liposculpture and a Tummy Tuck

Whereas liposculpture removes pockets of fat cells in various parts of the body, a tummy tuck does two additional things (to the abdomen only): removes excess skin and tightens the wall of the abdomen, which is important if you have an abdominal hernia (separation of the muscles) from pregnancy.

Misconception 5: Fat Loss Is Always Permanent

La Jolla Body Contouring SurgeryIt’s difficult to say if a fat removal treatment will deliver the desired results, and it’s no different with liposculpture. As effective as the procedure may be, it’s impossible to remove every fat cell, but those that do remain will not expand if you control your weight.

By eating right and exercising regularly, the chance of regaining weight in the treated area is very slim. However, that doesn’t mean that other parts of your body will never gain fat, especially if you don’t maintain a proper diet and exercise regimen.

Misconception 6: The Fat Transfers Elsewhere on the Body

Simply put, no evidence has ever shown this to be true. Fat removal via liposuction can be permanent, so long as the patient eats right and exercises regularly.

If you regain weight, especially a significant amount, your body will show it by expanding or filling out in areas where fat cells exist and are predisposed genetically to fatten like the breasts and buttock. In the areas that have undergone fat removal, your new contours are not disturbed.

Misconception 7: There’s an Age Limit for the Procedure

Del Mar Fat Removal Body contouringEach liposuction case is taken on its own merits, but a person is considered a candidate for the body contouring procedure if he or she is in relatively good health and has a good medical history.

There is a caveat, though: regardless of age, patients who are considering liposuction should keep in mind that the fat removal procedure could result in excess sagging skin, especially for those whose skin has lost elasticity, which is often a consequence of old age.

Misconception 8: Liposuction is a Treatment for Cellulite

Liposuction removes pockets of excess fat. Cellulite, however, is a skin problem, not a fat problem.

Although fatty deposits that lie just beneath the skin do factor in, the appearance of cellulite is caused by fibers from the fatty deposits that pull on the skin, creating the dimpled look that is considered unsightly. This fibrous material is not fat; in fact, it’s fairly rigid to the touch, making liposuction ineffective for treating cellulite. For patients with cellulite, Cellfina, surgical subcision or a new injectable treatment (soon to be available) is a great non-invasive treatment that helps reduce the appearance of cellulite.
